Its Fountains
When visiting the Old Centre, you will discover the daily life of the inhabitants of the city, as well as the fountains.
For a long time, Aubenas was called: "The city without water." Perched high on a hill, it could not be doused with no water. In the 19th century, the Mayor Jean Mathon did perform work, titanic for the time, bringing water from a source tapped at Antraigues (14 kms). On June 23, 1863, a big celebration inaugurated the 50 fountains built in the city (today only a few still exist) and all together, will be "spiting" water at 7pm in the jubilation. The festivities last for a whole month!
